Low-carbon hydrogen has the potential to bolster the UK’s future energy security and play a transformative role in the UK’s transition to net zero. Hydrogen can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from industrial sectors which are difficult to decarbonise, and has the potential to provide flexible energy for power, heat and transport.

The North Sea Transition Authority is the licensing and consenting authority for UK offshore hydrogen transport and storage.

The North Sea is well-placed to support the development of the UK’s hydrogen industry, with its existing energy infrastructure, vast storage capacity and world-class oil and gas industry workforce, whose skills are highly transferable to hydrogen production, transport and storage projects and operations.

An example of the potential of hydrogen can be found in the Bacton Energy Hub (BEH) project which would integrate the southern North Sea’s hydrogen, natural gas, carbon storage and offshore wind resources.
