Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is critical to the UK achieving net zero. Government aims to capture and store 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030 and over 50 million tonnes per year by 2035.
The CO2 Transportation and Storage Task Force (CTS Taskforce) aims to have an integrated approach to address the key challenges and opportunities facing this new sector, facilitating dialogue between all stakeholders, and working together to deliver strategic direction and tangible results.

Focus Areas
Monitoring
The Monitoring Subgroup was tasked with screening monitoring technologies that could reduce reliance on 4D seismic and recommend a shortlist of those that could benefit from site-specific field trials or tests over the first carbon storage sites in the UKCS and a suite of potential ways in which the trials or tests could be executed. These new technologies may also have the potential to deliver additional benefits around improved resolution, reduced cost, or benefits around environmental impact.
A report was recently prepared for the CCUS T&S Taskforce, by the Monitoring subgroup, to screen monitoring technologies that could reduce reliance on 4D seismic and recommend those that could benefit from testing over the Track-1 & Track-2 stores. It can be found on the taskforce’s external site.
Shortening Time - Appraisal to injection process
The second sub-group, Appraisal to injection process, is delivering a report to make recommendations to optimise the process from appraisal to first injection and provide clarity on the regulatory interfaces.
